WOW what an amazing morning! Hopewell was honoured to be selected as a stop on Free the Children's We Create Change Tour. Our Me to We Club has been working hard this year and Free the Children has taken notice! :) The assembly was like a mini We Day event, featuring inspiring guest speakers Spencer West and 11-year-old Hannah Alper. The band Neverest also played a few songs! The main message was that together, we can make a difference in our world. This year, Free the Children is focusing on Education, so we learned a lot about those who do not have access to education around the world and what we can do to to help.
Next week, as a school we're starting the We Create Change initiative for the month of May, bringing in our spare change to help change the situation for an impoverished community. Every $20 we raise provides 1 brick towards building a new schoolhouse. We are hoping as a school we can contribute towards a significant portion of a new school!
We were all SO excited as we walked into the gym with special lighting and music. I made sure we got there quickly, so we had front row seats! The first speaker was Hannah Alper, an inspiring and powerful speaker who is only 11-years-old and shorter than most of our students! She was a tiny girl with a BIG message about working together to be "change makers." Next we heard from the band Neverest - everyone enjoyed clapping along to their music. Finally, Spencer West took the stage and captured everyone's attention as he shared his story about "redefining possible" and encouraged all of us to play our part in helping to create change for those who face barriers around the world.
During his speaking time, Spencer had 4 of our Me to We club students come up for a demo. They had to assemble a cardboard house, but 1 group had one member wearing a blindfold and one with her hands behind her back. On top of that, their instructions weren't in English. The lesson was very clear and powerful: the group who easily won were able to because they had no restrictions and they could easily read the instructions. The group who didn't struggled because of the barriers they faced, just like many people around the world who cannot access education because of poverty or gender.
Overall, we loved the We Create Change tour stop and the students are very inspired and excited! I heard some great ideas today of how we can earn extra coins to donate.
