Our field trip to the National Art Gallery with the other grade 4 class was definitely a lesson in art culture and art appreciation. We first learned about Canadian Art through the years and analyzed or reenacted some classic works of art. The highlight for our class was definitely getting to see the Group of Seven paintings that we just imitated 2 weeks ago live in person. They were beautiful!
Students got to play underneath Maman the spider after lunch, and then we continued looking for the story within the painting with a different tour guide. European art was less exciting, but students thought the modern and contemporary art was very different. There was a basketball court missing pieces on the floor, a boulder smashing an airplane, and even a stage with a microphone to create your own vocal artistic expression.
Overall, I think we took away art appreciation and respect of all art forms.
